Friends of the Market are a go!
On Thursday the 13th we met with the City.
There were a few things that weren't feasable
but mostly it was a resounding "GO For IT".

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
the 28th, 29th and 30th of April
we will be holding the
 Muskegon Market Extreme Makeover

Friends of the Market
Muskegon Market Extreme Makeover

The Friends of the Market was originated in 2006.
This diverse group of volunteers, whose numbers increase weekly, have been given the “go ahead”
by the City of Muskegon to refurbish, enhance and promote the Muskegon Farmers Market.

The enhance and refurbish project revolves around 3 areas.
The market building itself will be repainted with new plantings around the building
and under the existing sign at the entry.  The 2 rows of covered vendor booths will be repainted
and using existing holders have flagpoles with removable colored flags rising above the roofline to
draw attention to the Market.  When the flags are flying the Market is open!  Across Murphy Street
to the west of the Market a spot will be groomed and will host an area with picnic tables and acoustic
entertainment on Saturdays when the Market is open.
The Gathering Spot will offer a wonderful
atmosphere and view of the Market to its customers and friends.

In addition to the other days the Farmers Market is open, each Saturday you find the city’s largest
multi-cultural and demographically diverse gathering of people in Muskegon.   Families, friends and
neighbors and those that drive from miles away are all there because they want to be.  Because it’s
the place to be.  One of Muskegon’s Cool Spots!

This team is going to scrape and paint the building, which has fallen into disrepair.
They are appealing to retail for donations of primer, paint and solvents.

paint brushes and paint tape.

Team Two – Covered Vendor Booths
Team Leader – Kathleen Hardy
Phone – 744-5087
This team is going to clean up the covered market booths.
They are also looking for retail donations of primer, paint and solvents.
There are also some broken brackets that should be fixed.  Could a welder fix those?
Team volunteers are asked to bring ladders, wire brushes, scrapers, tarps, paintbrushes and rollers.

Team Three – The Gathering Spot
Team Leader – Nana Kratovil and the Unitarian Church
                        Phone – 755-2932
                        Shawn Willson @ 231-778-2030
This team is going to create a spot for gathering on the high ground across Murphy Street from the Market.
The city will provide picnic tables, garbage cans and “no parking” signs.  The team will be cleaning up the trees, planting natural borders, perhaps barking the area.

They are looking for specific hardy plants.  There is no water there.  Also a donated wooden platform, built low to the ground.  Someone with a small chain saw to trim clump of trees.  Loppers. Bring your own shovels, gloves.  Need wheelbarrows or garden carts.   Rakes.

Sustenance Team
Dates for the Makeover are Friday the 28th, Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th.
We’ll start at 8 am.
Donated beverages and sandwiches would be appreciated.
We would like to make this a community working picnic atmosphere.

Volunteers Needed for the summer- Join the Friends

The Flags
Team Leader – J’Nai Closz
                        744-1767
This team is putting some major flags at the market.
They are looking for volunteers to put the flags up on Saturdays.  And take them down.

Friends of the Market Booth
Friends would like to establish themselves as a group with dues of $10.00 a year.
They would rent a booth ( 1 booth all year $188.) and staff it.  An information booth.
Promotion of the Market might take the form of t-shirts, canvas market bags, travel mugs and other appropriate items.  Recipes from Bill Seeback and his old Chronicle column would be available.  Other recipes might be collected.  Coupons might be passed out.

Friends will need members to volunteer to spend a Saturday at the Market meeting and greeting.
An e-mail newsletter might be established.  Notices.  New possibilities.  Information on sales.  Coupons or discounts for members?  Looking for someone interested in taking this on as a project.
